Surprising Christiana

Where the law doesn't exist... which is inside stays inside

While in Copenhagen, we went to Christiana and the only thing I can tell you is: Go there! We’ve never seen anything like this place!

Christiania is an autonomous 84 acre free town within Copenhagen. It sits on an abandoned military base and was founded in 1971 by squatters and artists as a social experiment. Nowadays, approximately 900 people live there as a community that has its own rules and where decisions are made through meetings.

It is also known for its open cannabis trade in the Green Light District.

Photography inside the community are not allowed. Before you enter Christiana, a sign reads:

DEAR FRIENDS, THERE ARE THREE RULES IN THE GREEN LIGHT DISTRICT: HAVE FUN; DON’T RUN — IT CAUSES PANIC; NO PHOTOS — BUYING AND SELLING HASH IS STILL ILLEGAL.”
